Review: Ancient Astronauts

A few weeks ago I was asked if I wanted to review a new comic from a small publishers called Black Panel Press. Of course I jumped at the chance to read new comics I’d never heard of and have a chance to promote up and coming comic creators! With that said though, this review is totally my own opinion and thoughts on the comic, I havent been paid for this, I just wanted to help out indie comic labels if I could!

So yeah, Ancient Astronauts. A soon as I saw the cover I thought I would love it. Watercolour is my jam! I’m pretty much guaranteed to pick up a comic if its watercolour, and even if I don’t like the story, its beautiful to look at, so it’s almost always a winner. Also, Unicorns.

I’ll admit it took me few goes to get into the rhythm of the story. Partly because computer was skipping every other page and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why the story didn’t make any sense! But even after I transferred to the Kindle and tried again, there is so much going on that I had to start over and slow down to really take it all in. This is a huge world that Pompetti has created and there is so much to figure out. There are so many levels to the story and with every page you go deeper and deeper in, its full of juicy bits that make you want to keep on reading. Its got a lot of text, which seems like a silly point, but I really like a comic with a good amount of text, I suppose that’s the bibliophile in me trying to get out. I liked the characters, the way they interact with each other and the hint of a back story that you get. I really hate it when authors try and cram all the back story into really unatural rushed conversations. I really liked the way that even though it was a good chunk of a story there is still obviously more to come and that makes me excited to read the next one. I don’t want to say too much about the actual story because one, I dont want to ruin it for you, and two, I wouldn’t even know where to begin and I definitely wouldnt be able to it justice. But if you like space, aliens, mythology, interdimentional travel, badass women and mystery…you will enjoy this for sure!

The only thing I didnt like about this comic, and its kind of why I liked it so much too, is there was so much going on! I felt like there was kind of too much story and too many ideas all in one book. Maybe because I binge read it I was just too much for me to take at once, but I sort of wish it was maybe drawn out a little longer, maybe split up into a more Graphic Novels, each a little more in depth. I know there is a second one coming out and im super excited to read it because I need to know what happens next, but I would not complain if this had turned into 4 novels, each a little more specific. Over all though a great read, visually beautiful, there were a few pages which I wish I could hang on my wall and a really interesting unique story, which is hard to do these days.

If you head on over to Black Panel Press you can check out where to get this comic and the other ones that area avaliable, I myself am eyeing up The Gallic Wars, that looks so sweet!
